A bit about RedDragonfly Silks
My name is Marie Philpott and I live in the North East of England. I began RedDragonfly Silks in 2011. I hadn't done much silk painting before that, although I had been interested in the use of colour through sewing and photography.
The tradition of silk painting goes back thousands of years and it is wonderfully creative. I love having the freedom to apply a range of coloured paints or dyes, and then to watch beautiful patterns emerge as the colours mix and blend. With silk painting each piece is totally unique.
I use free-flowing techniques to produce abstract designs, and gutta resist and wax for more traditional effects. I work with both paints and dyes, and use different weights of silk depending upon the effect I am looking for. Some pieces I use just as they are, eg for scarves or lampshades, some pieces I fix to glass to make decorative bowls or vases.
Silk painting, like other art therapies, helps to reduce anxiety and stress. It is relaxing and engaging, in addition to being creative and enjoyable. This is often a bonus for people attending one of my workshops: they leave feeling more energised and yet more relaxed than when they arrive.
I offer workshops for individuals, small groups and larger organisations. For example, in the past I have provided workshops and talks for Maggie's centres, WI, Inner Wheel, and not-for-profit housing associations.
I have been a member of the Guild of Silkpainters since 2012.
